Energy efficiency

One of PETROPERÚ‘s main efforts is aimed at carrying out energy management that optimizes, both physically and economically, the use of energy.

The mitigation of climate change is one of our strategic objectives through the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Below are some of the main initiatives related to Efficient Energy Management, Energy Policies, Climate Change and the like that PETROPERÚ has been working on:

PETROPERÚ Energy Committee

Since 2014, actions and projects to improve energy management have been working through the Company’s Energy Committee and, as part of its activities, it has structured and has been implementing a Work Plan, which seeks to consolidate a efficient management of energy resources, aimed at achieving an effective reduction of costs and environmental impacts associated with our productive activities.

Corporate Climate Commitment (7C)

As part of our commitment to the environment, in 2014 we joined the Corporate Climate Commitment (7C), an initiative that seeks to measure the level of maturity of the public and private sectors regarding the management of Climate Change.

The commitments that are part of this initiative are divided into seven axes, on which member organizations publicly report their progress and challenges on climate change, thus promoting the exchange of experiences as a tool for continuous improvement.

Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG)

Since 2013, we started developing GHG Emissions Inventories, a tool for quantifying total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released into the atmosphere and as a result of our activities, thus allowing us to establish the starting point to define the real ones Possibilities of the Corporation for the reduction and/or compensation of its emissions.

Likewise, in order to ensure the coherence, transparency, precision and fidelity of the reported information, our GHG Emissions Report was subjected to an external verification process that confirms the application of the ISO 14064-I: 2006 standard, a widely accepted standard. internationally for the purposes of calculating GHG emissions.

Fuel Replacement: Changes in the Energy Matrix

Among the main works identified for the management of environmental impacts in our Company, related to energy management, we highlight – due to the magnitude of the greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions achieved – the replacement in the use of traditional fuels at the Conchán Refinery for natural gas, a fuel not only cheaper per unit of energy delivered but also less intensive in the emission of GHG into the atmosphere.

In Conchán, the change in the energy matrix from industrial oil to natural gas, implemented as of 2011, added to the investment made for the introduction of new combustion technology, has meant a reduction in GHG emissions estimated in the order of 14,600.00 tCO2e/year.

ISO 50001 Energy Management System

In the medium term, the implementation of energy management systems under the ISO 50001 standard has been considered, in order to order, standardize and normalize actions related to energy management, within a framework of saving resources and with the purpose of contributing to reduce the impacts on the planet.
